Parish Nurse PDF Print E-mail

Parish Nursing is a health ministry of faith communities which emphasizes the wholeness of body, mind and spirit.  Rooted in the vision of Christ as Healer, this ministry grows out of the belief that all faith communities are places of health and healing and have a role in promoting wholeness through the integration of faith and health.

What is a Parish Nurse?

  • The parish nurse is a nurse of the church who is a person of Catholic faith committed to promoting the integration of body, mind and spirit, not simply a nurse in the church.
  • The parish nurse is a registered nurse with an active license who functions within the scope of nursing and in accordance with the Parish Nurse Standards of Practice.
  • The parish nurse assists and advocates for parishioners needing access to the health care system.
  • The parish nurse helps to promote the understanding of the relationship between lifestyle, attitudes and faith in order to continue to build a healthy, caring church community.

What Does a Parish Nurse Do?

  • Provides health information on pertinent health related topics.
  • Assesses physical, emotional and spiritual needs.
  • Makes telephone, home, nursing home and hospital visits that may include praying with a church member.
  • Advises parishioners as a doctor or health provider needs to become involved in their care due to changing medical conditions.
  • Refers parishioners to a physician, home care or health care agency, priest, social service or support group and/or respite care.
  • Provides personal counseling regarding health related concerns.
  • Assists individuals and families in integrating faith and health in their everyday lives.
  • Recruits, trains and schedules volunteers to meet the physical needs of St. Andrew's parish community.
  • Offers programs in health awareness issues relevant to the needs of both individuals and groups.
  • Coordinates with the Homebound Ministry to assure that the sacramental needs of the sick and homebound are being met.

The parish nurse is not a substitute for a home care or public health nurse and does not provide any care that requires a physician's order.
