St. Andrew’s Cathedral is proud of its Music Ministry. Two choirs of approximately 45 musicians and singers provide music in traditional and contemporary styles at our 9:30 and 11:00 services on Sunday mornings. Both services attract parishioners and visitors of all ages and many cultures, so our music attempts to capture a spirit of diversity. Chant, polyphony, sacred classical as well as contemporary four part anthems, hymns and songs are chosen to sing our praises to God. Hymns include old favourites as well as the best melodies from the vast variety of new church music available today from our tradition and other cultures. Grand piano, guitars & flutes provide a more contemporary accompaniment for choir and assembly singing at the 9:30 mass, while the more traditional sound of our Cassavant Organ and choir soars from the choir loft at the 11:00 mass. The two choirs often join voices to provide music for important feasts such as Easter Triduum and Solemn Christmas Eve services and special prayer services. Music is also provided by a Leader of Song at the 5pm masses on Saturday and Sunday.

This year we are celebrating the 125th anniversary of our cathedral from October 30, 2016 to October 30th, 2017. We are hoping to have good solid choirs to enhance our liturgical celebrations throughout this special year. Perhaps you would consider joining a choir for this anniversary season.

As the Diocesan church, music ministry is augmented by musicians and singers from other parishes for special celebrations such as Ordinations, Chrism Mass and other diocesan events. Instrumental ensembles such as brass quartet, timpani, string Quartet often join other cathedral musicians for these special events.

St. Andrew’s Cathedral also supports visiting artists and choirs, instrumentalists, community concerts and music events in the church and we will be sponsoring some lovely choral and instrumental events for the coming year.

  • The 9:30 mass choir sings a range of sacred music with a more contemporary focus.  Soprano, alto, tenor and bass voices are welcome.  Guitarists, woodwinds, percussion, instrumentalists also welcome.  Practice: 7:15 - 9:15 pm Thursdays in the Parish Centre.
  • The 11:00 mass choir sings a range of music from traditional chant, classical to contemporary music with organ/piano accompaniment. Soprano, alto, tenor bass voices are welcome.  Instruments such as woodwinds, violin & trumpet will be given consideration. Practice:  7:15 - 9:15 pm Wednesdays in the Parish Centre.
